It seems as if a lot of millennials are hustling in order to make their dreams a reality. If there was one title I would refer to myself (and every other girl out there making her dreams come true) it would be girl boss. Just because I am not the owner of some multi-millioextrn dollar company doesn’t mean I can’t be considered a girl boss. To me, being a girl boss means that I am not going to settle for anything less than what I want. Ever.
As a college student and blogger, I know what it’s like to have a full time “job” and still work extremely hard on my side hustle (blogging). People regularly ask me how I am handling engineering school and maintaining a blog at the same time. There are also others who don’t really understand what all goes into blogging, so they don’t understand why I get stressed at times. Well, friends, today I am going to show you a typical day in the life of a college student and blogger. Although school is over for the semester, I am working full time during the week, so this schedule will pretty much stay the same. Also, please keep in mind that this is just a general day in the life and since life is always unexpected, these tasks may vary.
5:15 am : Alarm goes off
I originally set my alarm clock this early so it would give me time to do some yoga in the mornings…which lasted about a week. Now, whenever my phone yells at me to wake up I ease into “awake” mode by scrolling through social media (especially instagram, since I love pictures and it doesn’t require too much reading in the morning). This time is also when I will make sure a blog post went live and that I have social media shares scheduled throughout the day. I then check Facebook and add my new blog post to some blogging groups that I am a member of to get the word out about my new, awesome post.
5:45-7:00 am : Get ready for the day
This part is kind of self explanatory, but my typical activities include taking a shower (because you know, I don’t want to smell), curling my hair, and putting minimal makeup on. I will then pack my lunch, eat a bowl of cereal and make a cup of tea prior to my 30 minute commute.
7:30-4:30 pm: Work Work Work Work Work
Work and school are pretty time consuming, so I never have time to do any blog work except for my lunch break.
5:00-8:00 pm: Get some serious blogging done
Depending on the day of the week and whether or not I have plans for the evening, I’ll usually devote some hours at the end of the day to get some real blogging done. This ranges from interacting with other bloggers, cranking out blog posts, shooting pictures, or brainstorming new ideas for future projects.
8:00- whenever I fall asleep: Unwind
Although I would really love to work until the minute I hit the hay, it’s really not good for me to not take a little time to unwind from the day and just relax. I use this time to either read or catch up on some of my shows that I recorded during the week.
My days are pretty jam packed, but since I love both my job and blogging, it doesn’t seem like a bad gig for the time being!
What’s in my blogging bag?
For the last couple months, I have been going to Starbucks to get a lot of my blogging done. There’s something about being in a different environment and being around other people working that makes me so much more productive. In order to successfully get everything done while away from the house, I need a bag that will carry all the blogging goodies. I recently received a tote from Dagne Dover and I think my blogging life has been altered forever. I have the 15 inch tote, and let me tell you, it should probably be called a “Marry Poppins tote” because it can hold so much stuff it’s insane. I love that there is a special place to put your water bottle so it doesn’t sweat all over your papers (that was some good thinking!!)
I love that this bag is large enough to easily fit my laptop and and everything else I need. So, let’s get to the point here and talk about what I actually lug around with me when I go work on my blog.
Laptop // Mainly because you get much work done without your computer (:
Notebook // I love writing down my ideas and outlining my posts on paper. There are so many times that my thoughts have flown faster when I am putting pen to paper.
Cute pens // My two favorite kinds of pens to write with are the Pilot G2 and Sharpie pens
Headphones // Sometimes Starbucks can get a little noisy, so having headphones handy helps keep me productive and not listening to all of the side conversations.
Magazines // Going through periods of not being inspired is a blogger’s worst nightmare which is why I always have a magazine with me when I am working on my blog. I love seeing all the new fashion trends and figuring out how I can incorporate them into a post.
Chapstick // My lips are always chapped, so you are likely to find chapstick in any bag or coat I own
Do you have a side hustle? I would love to hear how you manage that and what you keep in your work bag!
