Well, friends. It’s that time of year! And no I don’t mean being upset that the holidays are over, or the fact that classes are back in session. We’re talkin’ cold and flu season! Why is it that we wait until we are bed-ridden to figure out how to get rid of a cold fast? Seriously, there have been SO many times that I have found a remedy that sounds pretty dang awesome, but do I have the ingredients? Of course, not.
While this post is definitely for you sicker-than-heck lovelies (I hope you feel better soon!!), it is also for those who want to be prepared for the day they, or someone they love, catch that terrible cold going ’round town.
Okay, now I do need to break the news to you. If you don’t act on getting rid of your cold quickly, it may take up to 7 days to feel any better. There are several ways that I’m going to talk about that not only will help you get rid of a cold fast (if you act fast) but will also help relieve your cold symptoms. Because girl, ain’t nobody got time to be sick!

This method is the one my mom swears by in order to get rid of a cold. However, this is also a method that requires you to act fast. Zinc performs best when taken within 24 hours of your first signs of a cold (sniffles, sneezing, cough…) I’ve seen so many sources go back and forth on recommending zinc for a cold, but there’s no denying that when I take a zinc lozenge twice a day I start feeling better so much faster.
Whenever I see people sniffling or hear them coughing it doesn’t take two seconds before I’m downing some Emergen-C. Because Vitamin C is such a great immune booster, taking this regularly throughout cold and flu season with help you at least reduce the effects of symptoms.
During the winter months, I typically take Vitamin C pills on the daily and chug some Emergen-C when needed for extra support. This added boost can also help prevent your cold from developing into something more serious, like the flu.
Get your sleep
Whenever your body is going through any kind of illness, the best thing you can do is rest. At the risk of sounding like your momma, you really just need to hop in bed and get your rest. Giving your body that time to recoup is so essential because so much of your healing happens when you sleep!
Also in general when your body is worn down from hustling too much you’re more susceptible to catching what’s going around. During cold + flu season, it never hurts to make sure you catch up on your zzz’s!
Clean clean clean
Yep, I’ll admit I’m that person that follows the sick one around to disinfect everything they touch. When bacteria can live on a surface for up to 48 hours, I don’t wanna risk it. And yeah, I do annoy everyone in my house when I do this 🙂
Staying hydrated is key not just for preventing dehydration. When you’re sick, drinking extra water will help flush out the toxins in your body.
If you get sick of drinking plain old water try switching it up! Adding some lemon to your water is always great (+ an excellent source of Vitamin C!) Drinking hot tea is also another option and it always soothes my throat. There are so many herbal teas now that punch huge punches now a days! I’ve been seriously LOVING the Bigelow Benefits line

Oh girl, you ain’t the only one that starts to panic about becoming sick–thinking about #allthethings that you still have to get done. #Aintnobodygottimeforthis.
But seriously, the more stressed you are and the more you try to get done, the longer the cold is going to linger. Take this time as some personal and mental health days to regroup and get yourself better! Going to get a massage or facial always seems to make me feel better too! 🙂
As your virtual BFF, I’m here to look for ya, chica! This is the year to put yourself and your health first. This is the year to say “no” to things simply because you need your rest. And this is absolutely not the year to be apologetic about it either!
While these tips on how to get rid of a cold work wonders on me, everyone is different. If you have concerns regarding supplements or any medication, talk to your doctor prior to taking them.
