What’s summer without outdoor activities and playing in the water?? One of my favorite things to do in the summer is spend time on the lake fishing and relaxing. The rocking of the boat never fails to put me to sleep.
The first summer that Cory and I were dating was the first time I had ever been out on Lake Erie to fish. To be perfectly honest, I actually dreaded going because I thought I wasn’t going to like it at all. However, to my pleasant surprise, I fell in love with catching and holding the Walleye and having an overall relaxing weekend. There really is nothing better than a weekend away from reality to recharge from hectic schedules.
The first time going to the lake I didn’t know what to expect, so there were definitely some products that I needed but hadn’t packed. Since this is my third summer taking trips to the lake, I have perfected what’s in my lake bag. Whenever I go places, I tend to be an over-packer. Seriously…what if you need that one small item while you’re out on the boat and you don’t have it?? Well, friend, you’re screwed. Because these items are geared toward water, what’s in my lake bag can also be utilized for your pool or beach bag.
First and foremost, I never forget sunglasses. When you are out on the water and have minimal shade and clouds, they are life savers.
In the dead of summer you may show up with your hair down, but there is a good chance you’re leaving with it pulled up. I have a bad habit of always having a hair tie on my wrist, but just in case it breaks, I always have some extras in the lake bag. I really like the hair ties that have some rubber/ silicone on them because they stay in my hair so much better than regular ones.
Tinted moisturizer/ bb cream
I refuse to be on the boat or go to the pool with a full face of makeup. First, I don’t want to sit in the hot sun sweating with my makeup practically melting off me. Second, who wants to worry about the risk of raccoon eyes when you get wet?
Not me, no thank you.
I will, however, put a little bit of BB Cream on my face before I go out. It gives me a nice coverage but doesn’t feel heavy on my face.
I have never jumped off the fishing boat into the lake, but you never know if you’ll want to! For a beach or pool bag, this one is pretty obvious, but if you are on a big lake fishing, just take a swim suit just in case. I got this swim suit about two summers ago and am still in love with it. Because I am always so busy in the summers, I don’t swim a lot, so this one has held up against the minimal amount of times it has actually seen water.
Unless you prefer waiting to air dry in the sun, I would suggest throwing a towel in your lake bag as well.
Sunscreen + lotion
Protecting my skin from the sun is so important to me since skin cancer really is no joke. However, I know how beneficial it is to get vitamin D naturally, so I’m always applying sunscreen for an easy win-win. What I love about the new Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Weightless Lotion Sunscreen SPF 30 is that it also hydrates while protecting your skin from the sun. The mixture of shea butter and silk protein provide your body with up to 12 hours of moisture, which is essential for a day out in the sun because the sun actually draws moisture from your body! Although the moisture lasts for 12 hours, you should still reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours if you are swimming, sweating, or towel drying. While some people might not like the tropical scent of sunscreens, I am obsessed with that summer fragrance and love that this Hawaiian Tropic sunscreen smells that way.
Sometimes with sunscreen I have noticed that it makes my skin really oily and greasy after application. However, once dry, you won’t even know that the sunscreen is on (except for the wonderful scent, of course)! This is something that I really appreciate because who wants to feel a thick layer of grease on them all day?!
The Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Weightless Lotion Sunscreen is available in broad spectrum UVA and UVB SPF 15 and 30 and is available in mass, grocery and drug retailers nationwide and online for about $9.99.
After sun exposure, I always lather up with a moisturizing lotion to replenish my skin with the moisture that it lost throughout the day. Like the Silk Hydration Weightless Lotion Sunscreen, the Sheer Touch Ultra Radiance After Sun Moisturizer is extremely moisturizing but you can’t feel it’s there once dried! It’s also one of the first after sun lotions that soothes, softens and leaves your skin radiant after sun exposure. You can find the Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch Ultra Radiance After Sun Moisturizer at most mass retailers, drugstores and online for about $7.99.
Overall, I am extremely impressed with this combo of suncreen and after-sun lotion because it leaves my skin soft rather than sticky. (:
I mean… if putting wet feet back into gym shoes is your thing, then go for it. I prefer to let my feet hair out with flip flops and it’s so much easier to just slip them on an go!
Early in the morning when we first head out on the water, the breeze can still be a little chilly. Being cold is never something I enjoy, so since a light jacket is easy to pack it’s always in the lake bag.
Personally, being out in the sun all day can cause really bad headaches. I always keep a bottle of headache meds in my bag and take at the earliest onset of a headache so I can be able to continue having fun outside!
How can you fish without a license?? Funny story– two years ago when I first got a fishing license, the lady marked me as a “male” instead of “female.” Yep, and it still shows up that I’m a boy every time I renew my license… HA!
What else do you carry in your pool/ lake bag?
